Summary
From open land to forest pasture: converting a spruce monoculture into an ecologically valuable eco-account
In 2017, the company Natur Perspektiven GmbH initiated the creation of the eco-account „Vogelsang“ in the district of Pfaffenhofen (Ilm) in Upper Bavaria. The goal of the project is to support local biodiversity by compensating impacts that are inflicted on natural habitats by construction. The Vogelsang covers an area of approximately 28 ha and is the largest coherent eco-account in the district of Pfaffenhofen. Transforming the former spruce monoculture offers a unique opportunity to form a natural, species rich and highly structured forest and to generate a recreational area for the local population. The forest management is based on the historic concept of coppice-with-standards paired with extensive sheep grazing. This combination creates ecologically highly valuable and diverse habitats for different species and an appealing landscape for visitors of the area.
